Tracking the rising costs of everything.

In 2024, candidate Donald Trump promised us this:

We got this:

Key Headlines

US coffee prices surge as tariffs take effect (9/12)

Coffee prices in the US have surged more than 20% in the last year, as duties on some of the world’s biggest producers take effect. While American consumers have in general been shielded from the impact of tariffs, coffee drinkers are feeling the pinch as steep duties on imports from Brazil and Vietnam force sellers to pass on some of the cost.

CBO Sees Lower US Growth, Higher Unemployment This Year (9/12)

The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office’s economic projections released Friday showed the economy will expand 1.4% in 2025, down from a January estimate of 1.9%. Inflation will pick up to 3.1%, nearly a full percentage point higher than the prior estimate…The report also shows unemployment peaking at a higher rate of 4.5% at the end of this year.

Inflation climbs in August as grocery and gas prices jump

Consumer prices in August were up 2.9% from a year ago, according to a report Thursday from the Labor Department. That’s a sharper annual increase than the previous month, when inflation was clocked at 2.7%.  Prices rose 0.4% between July and August, compared to a 0.2% increase the previous month. Prices for groceries jumped 0.6% while gasoline prices rose 1.9%. Consumers also saw higher prices for new and used cars, clothing and airfares in August.

Cooler US producer inflation hints at softening demand (9/10)

U.S. producer prices unexpectedly fell in August amid a compression in trade services margins and mild increase in the cost of goods, suggesting that domestic firms were probably absorbing some of the tariffs on imports. The lack of strong producer price pressures…could also be signaling softening domestic demand against the backdrop of a struggling labor market.

Monthly Retail Grocery Prices

Here’s the latest data on everyday things Americans buy from the grocery store.  If you are seeing a difference  in headlines on price increases, it may be the difference between wholesale (what grocery stores and food distributors pay) and retail (what we consumers pay). In addition, we peg January 1, just before President Trump assumed office as the basis for the comparison. These update automatically as new data is released.
